What is Pickleball? In one word. FUN! As soon as I started playing, I was addicted. Pickleball is like a drug. You just can’t get enough and always want more. If you ask me why that is, I think it’s due to one simple reason. The size of the court.
Measuring approximately 13m long and 6m wide, a Pickleball court allows for easy engagement with the other players. This provides a friendly, ease of communication in Pickleball, making it a social and engaging activity. Once you begin playing and, I suggest you do, you will notice there is a lot of friendly “banter” and laughter on the Pickleball Court.
You don’t need a background in sport or even racquet sports for that matter. The rules are reasonably simple and, once you understand scoring, you are well and truly away (however this isn’t important at the start). Every single club I’ve been to are most welcoming and will guide you along from a beginner to a competitor, if this is the path you choose. Pickleball is also a sport for various age groups from youth to older age, and is a great way to stay active throughout all life stages.
In Pickleball, you can remain a social level player or head to every tournament you possibly can, it’s freely your choice. Pickleball can also be as simple or strategic as you want it to be.
Setting up a point in singles in a match or with a doubles partner is both challenging and rewarding and ignites the fire to want more from this game.
I started playing in the month of December and played in my first Tournament in July the following year. Today, I play in tournaments as often as I can, but that’s due to my competitive spirit and will to be better, in any sport I play. This doesn’t have to be your journey but the fabulous friendships formed and support received from strangers as well as your fellow club members at tournaments is so wonderful and truly fulfilling. I encourage you to begin your own Pickleball journey and see where this intriguing game takes you. Choose your own path as you go.
Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in America, and is quickly expanding in Australia too. The NSW Pickleball Titles welcomed more than 600 participants in April 2025 and, The Australian Pickleball Championships will see more than 1200 players compete in September/October 2025.
Trust me, Pickleball is taking over!! Get involved!!
